Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma
Wins ONE Awards Top Honor—The 2008 Award for Excellence
Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits Honors 29 of the State’s Best Nonprofits at First Annual Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence Awards Gala
The Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits named Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma the Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence (ONE) Awards’ top nonprofit for 2008 at its inaugural ONE Awards gala held tonight in Tulsa. Eleven more agencies were winners of their unique category of service, and 17 received finalist awards. In total, $160,000 was awarded to 29 of the states best nonprofits for 2008.
“All 29 of tonight’s ONE Awards honorees were chosen for excellence displayed while accomplishing their mission, along with proof of best practices and sustainability,” said Joe Moran, chairman of the 2008 ONE Awards, and member of the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits’ Board of Directors. “Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma exemplifies this excellence in every way. We hold them, and all of tonight’s winners, in the highest esteem because they are a model for others working to achieve this recognition.”
Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma provides food for more than 48,000 hungry Oklahomans each week, nearly half of whom are children. Since it began in 1980 with a mission to help the charitable community effectively feed people in need, Regional Food Bank has grown into the state’s largest private hunger-relief organization, distributing 268 million pounds of food to more than 500 partner agencies in 56 central and western Oklahoma counties. Through the Food Bank’s programs and services, chronically hungry elementary children can focus on learning, senior citizens don’t have to choose between filling a prescription and putting food on the table, and single parents have somewhere to go to get food for their family at the end of the month when money is tight.
Rodney Bivens, executive director of Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, accepted the Charles Schusterman Award for Excellence on behalf of his organization. They were also awarded a $10,000 monetary gift.
Honorary Chair of the 2008 ONE Awards First Lady Kim Henry was accompanied by Gov. Brad Henry. The First Lady addressed the group of more than 350, expressing her esteem for the nonprofits of Oklahoma and their inspiring work. “I have had the opportunity of working with several of the nonprofits honored tonight. I am inspired by your steadfast commitment in remaining focused on your mission, no matter how many obstacles you face,” said Henry. “I know that many of you are operating with limited budgets, limited volunteers or workers, and with ever increasing demands on your services, yet you return each day with a commitment to do your very best for those you serve.”
The Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits, which works with and on behalf of Oklahoma nonprofits to strengthen capability and build capacity of their boards, staff and volunteers, created the ONE Awards with a dual purpose.
“Our goals are first, to recognize outstanding nonprofits that are judged to be excellent in the way they pursue their mission, and second, to increase statewide awareness about the roles that nonprofits play in contributing to the quality of life and to Oklahoma’s economic development, said Moran.”
A total of 29 nonprofits were honored in 9 categories of service including: Arts & Humanities, Community, Community Health Services, Education, Health Services, Self-Sufficiency, Seniors, Sports & Recreation, and Youth Development. The winners in each of nine categories received $7,500 and two finalists received $5,000.
The finalists were selected by the ONE Awards Selection Commission chaired by Jerry Dickman of the Chapman Foundations of Tulsa from among more than 100 nominees statewide. Others on this year’s distinguished Selection Commission were: Nance Diamond, Shawnee; Frederick Drummond, Pawhuska; Phil Lakin, Tulsa Community Foundation; Frank Merrick, Oklahoma City, the Merrick Foundation; Polly Nichols, Oklahoma City; Lew Ward, Enid; Rev. George E. Young, Sr., Oklahoma City; and Stanton Young, Oklahoma City.
